Description of CD Contents

This CD contains more than 500 pages of English (ESL) exercises and activities covering close to 800 words of thematic vocabulary. The files are designed to work with SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards. If your school has access to SMART Board technology, you will likely already have Notebook™ software installed on your computer and can open the files on this CD. If you need to install the SMART Board software, you can download the software from SMART Technology's website. For detailed directions on how to download the software click here.

The exercises are designed to be used as whole class activities (with a projector onto a SMART Board interactive whiteboard or a computer monitor), or your students can use them on individual computers, or in a lab-type setting for individual or partner work.

Hidden Words

 Hidden Words

This is an example of several exercises aimed at building thematic vocabulary that can be found in each of the 23 themed programs on the CD. The teacher should say the name of the image first, the students will repeat, then the word can be revealed underneath the image. The second time through, the students try to remember the words on their own without looking behind the images. If necessary, the word can be revealed. Sound bites are embedded so that the student can hear the proper pronunciation of each word by touching the word and/or image.

Find the Pairs

 Find the Pairs

Tic Tac Toe

Tic Tac Toe Form two teams (X and O). Can be group versus group, one on one, or teacher vs. the class, etc. Students must say the name of the image they want to place their X or O on. If they forget the word, they can touch the image to hear it. The goal is to get three X’s or three O’s in a row. When the game is over, the X’s and O’s are erased/deleted and the game starts again. You can keep track of games won with the points. The class decides if they want to play up to 3, or 5, or 7, or 10.

Rectangles

Rectangles In some activities, the words are hidden behind rectangles. The teacher should introduce the vocabulary saying the names of the images first, and then the words can be revealed. The rectangles are replaced and students try to remember the words on their own. Students can hear the proper pronunciation of each word by touching the word.

1 to 12

1 to 12 Appoint two teams (group or individual). The first team rolls the dice (by touching it) and must say the name of the image with the corresponding #(ex. if they roll a 5, they must name image #5). The team can then cross out the image on their side with the big “X” provided or use the interactive pen. The first team to cross out all of the images on their card wins. (If a number is rolled and the image is already crossed out, the team loses their turn.)
